FRANK TURNER - 'POSITIVE SONGS FOR NEGATIVE PEOPLE' OUT 7 AUGUST 2015 // NEW SINGLE 'THE NEXT STORM' IMPACTS 3 AUGUST - WATCH VIDEO HERE // UK HEADLINE TOUR IN NOVEMBER

Frank Turner will release his next studio album on 7 August 2015 through Xtra Mile Recordings and Polydor Records. Positive Songs For Negative People is the singer-songwriter’s sixth album and the follow-up to 2013’s critically-acclaimed Tape Deck Heart. It was made with his trusted backing band The Sleeping Souls and produced by Butch Walker in Nashville. “I feel like this record is my definitive statement, a summation of the first five records,” says Frank.

The first taste of the album is the single ‘The Next Storm’ which is available as an instant download for fans who preorder the album on iTunes. The video for ‘The Next Storm’ features Turner in the boxing ring with CM Punk, the longest-reigning WWE Champion of the modern era. Watch it here:

It has been an eventful decade for the troubadour from Winchester who now resides in Holloway, North London. Turner released his debut album, Sleep Is For The Week, in 2007 and has been on a glorious upward curve ever since. He is now one of the country’s most cherished songwriters, a man who plays the biggest venues in the land and whose records reach the higher echelons of the charts but who has never lost sight of his original MO: write, record, tour, repeat.

As he turned his attention towards his sixth album at the tail-end of 2014, Turner thought back to his debut. “When a band makes a debut record, there’s a freshness and excitement to it that bands often lose as time goes by,” he says. “I wanted to try and make a record with that young, exciting feel.” The idea was that Frank and his band would capture the exhilarating thrill of their live show. After a period of writing and perfecting the songs at a rehearsal studio in Oxfordshire, they headed to the US to work with Walker for an intense nine day recording session in which the album was completed. “Pretty much all of it is live. The end result is everything I wanted it to be,” he says.

Like much of Turner’s work, it is a record that takes Life’s Big Issues — triumphing over the darkest adversities — and places them inside a mix of beguiling, intricate vignettes and sweeping anthems. 'Josephine' is a punky singalong and 'Mittens' is a fist-clenched song of defiance while tracks such as 'Glorious You' and 'Demons' pack a bittersweet emotional punch. That it begins with 'The Angel Islington', a tribute to North London, and ends with 'Song For Josh', a touching eulogy recorded live at the 9.30 Club in Washington, is an apt reflection of the journey Frank Turner has made over the past 10 years. He has made homes from home, and formed strong bonds along the way. Positive Songs For Negative People is Turner at both his most reflective and celebratory.

Frank Turner has also announced details of a UK headline tour in November which will take in 11 cities, including at Alexandra Palace in London. Tickets will go on general sale 9am on Friday 19 June, or fans who preorder Positive Songs For Negative People via the official Frank Turner store will gain access to presale tickets — on sale from 9am Wednesday 17 June.

XTRA MILE RECORDINGS PRESENT 'SUMMER IN THE CITY' ON 8 JULY 2015 — SKINNY LISTER, WILL VARLEY, PJ BOND, AND THE RPMS // LIVE AT THE MONARCH, CAMDEN

On Wednesday 8 July, Xtra Mile Recordings are celebrating summer and the (hopefully) lovely warm weather by throwing a massive party at our home from home, The Monarch in Camden. Tickets for this fun-packed evening are £7 and available to purchase here

Also, on the same day, we are releasing the sixth installment of our annual label compilation, Xtra Mile High Club. More news on that very, very soon.

Dubbed Summer In The City — both the gig and the compilation — they'll feature acts from our roster as well as unsigned acts that we’re really excited by.

The gig will be a night of unrivaled fun, with bands, beach balls and balmy summer cocktails (and/or beer). Kicking off the night is up and coming Brighton band The RPMs, whose passion for rock 'n' roll and a knack for writing killer hooks makes them a very promising band to keep an eye on. Then, fresh from a rambling tour of mainland Europe and the UK, comes wandering singer-songwriter PJ Bond with touring partner (and XMHC Vol 5 alumnus) The Lion And The Wolf in tow. Next up will be Xtra Mile’s newest signing, Will Varley. Singer, storyteller, poet — he’s supported Frank Turner at the Royal Albert Hall, as well as Beans On Toast and The Proclaimers. Poignant, funny and utterly charming, he’s one to watch for certain.

Headlining the evening’s festivities are the twelve-legged party animal known as Skinny Lister, whose flagon of rum and infectious sing-a-longs will top off the night brilliantly. Their current album Down On Deptford Broadway is full of fantastic anthems about nights out, having a drink, love and living in London, and they’re the perfect headliners for our Summer In The City night.

8 July also sees the release of Xtra Mile High Club Vol 6: Summer In The City — a digital-only compilation that celebrates the breadth of talent across our roster, as well as a selection of unsigned acts that are rocking our boat at the moment. It includes new and recent songs from Frank Turner, Will Varley, Dan Andriano, Northcote, Esmé Patterson, Billy the Kid, Mull Historical Society and many more. The full tracklisting will be announced soon.

Competition — win a pair of tickets to Summer in the City, plus the compilation!

Now you know all about it, why not try to win two tickets to the gig and a free download of the compilation?

Using the hashtag #XMRsummer send us pictures of how you’re making your summer an XMR one, whether it's seeing our bands at festivals (or at gigs) or you’re just dressed in head-to-toe XMR merch while on a bike ride (as you do). However you’re managing to incorporate XMR into your summer fun, we wanna see. The best pictures will win this awesome prize! You and your friend/sibling/parent/cousin/lover/whomever could be partying with us all, and reliving the celebration afterwards with a huge bunch of XMR and unsigned songs with XMHC Vol 6!

Tag your pictures on social media for us to see:  @xtra_mile for Twitter and @xtramilerecordings for Instagram. Our decision is final, and we'll announce the winner at least a week before the show. Good luck!

“The Emergency Room started as something for me to do with songs I had been writing that didn’t seem to have a place on Alkaline Trio records,” explains Andriano.  Started when he found himself living in Florida, he released his debut full-length Hurricane Season in 2011 and toured troubadour-style around the release with just an acoustic guitar on the US and European legs of the Revival Tour.

Released by XMR for the world (except North America) — and by Asian Man Records in the US — Party Adjacent marks the beginning of a new chapter to the Emergency Room story. Produced by Jeff Rosenstock, formerly of Bomb the Music Industry, Andriano is joined by a backing band of Jeff, Kevin Higuchi of The Jeff Rosenstock Band and Mike Huguenor of Hard Girls to fantastic effect.  With influences ranging from Thin Lizzy to Elvis Costello to Billy Bragg, Party Adjacent is one of those rare records that is built by an artist's singular vision and augmented by exactly the right collaborative team.

MILLION DEAD 'HARMONY NO HARMONY' FIRST TIME ON VINYL — OUT 21 AUGUST 2015

Celebrating the tenth anniversary of Million Dead’s second album Harmony No Harmony, it gets a vinyl release for the first time on 21 August 2015 through Xtra Mile Recordings.

It will be a double LP in transparent yellow with gracefully redesigned artwork on a gatefold sleeve. Also available exclusively at the Xtra Mile Recordings shop will be a brand new t-shirt featuring the burnt match on the front of the record and the trademark band logo on the back.

Pre-order the record with, or without the t-shirt from our digital shop or grab the record from our good friends at Banquet Records.

Million Dead’s second and final album shows off a more muscular, cathartic and less immediate rock beast than debut A Song To Ruin. With guitarist Tom Fowler replacing band co-founder Cameron Dean, the band traded clean, powerful lines for a maelstrom of thick riffs and coruscating noise. These cacophonic storms also hid some of the band’s most gentle moments, including the bare-bones, acoustic-led title track.

The centrepiece of the album, and first single ‘Living the Dream’, is the perfect example of where the band were at, riding in on the holler of escalating white noise before fading into a gloriously clear waterfall of notes. It builds to a huge, melody-strewn chorus — “Every sound a memory but it’s all I’ll ever need / I always have a song inside my head” remains their catchiest and most poignant refrain.

It’s also home to their best video; an excellent, hilarious, and somehow moving tale of a washed-up glam-rock band finally wiping away their disguises and opening up to their audience.

Check it out here:

Full version, none of your single edit rubbish...

For fans of the band — old and new, perhaps led this way by vocalist Frank Turner and drummer Ben Dawson’s recent heavy band Möngöl Hörde, or bassist Julia Ruzicka, now in future of the left — the release of this album on vinyl has been a long time coming.
